*What*

A choral experience for full choirs, partial choirs, developing choirs and individuals. This will be led by experienced and well-respected, Kelly Proznick. This workshop is intended to give students and directors a big, musical “leg up!”

Note: The BC Youth Choir Chorfest event will be happening at the same time in Nanaimo.

Note: Individual students and ensembles are responsible for their own transportation, accommodation and supervision. The Coast Bastion Hotel has generously offered a discount rate for BC Teen Choir participants. Details will be provided upon registration. Booking must be made by April 12, 2023.

*Who

This opportunity is for full or parts of existing grade 8-12 choirs, teenage community choirs (age 13-18), etc. Perfect for groups that don’t have ideal balance, numbers, experience, repertoire and so forth.  This may include:

  • established choirs that see the educational benefit of this program.
  • developing ensembles: New program? New Teacher? Small Numbers? Untrained Voices?
  • choirs that are experiencing a building year.
  • groups that can’t travel with a full ensemble.
  • individual singers (likely local students only because of accommodation and supervision considerations)

*Student Experience*

  • 10+ hours of rehearsing repertoire with a skilled director
  • A focus on vocal technique and musicianship skills.
  • Repertoire that’s interesting, diverse and technically appropriate for young voices
  • The opportunity to “rub shoulders” with the BC Youth Choir
    • Sing for each other
    • Share a song at rehearsal and/or a performance
    • Attend a BCYC performance.
  • Perform as part of a gala concert
  • Social events and interaction with other teens

*Choir Director Opportunities*

  • Observe the Chorfest Mass Teen Choir Rehearsals
  • Observe BCYC rehearsals
  • Gather new Repertoire and a tonne of new musical information for their individual programs!

About Kelly Proznick, BC Teen Choir (BCTC) Conductor:  

Kelly Proznick, B Mus, B ED, a well-known and highly regarded musician from Vancouver will conduct the BCTC.  Kelly started performing at a young age through involvement in dance (RAD Ballet), music and musical theatre.  Her post-secondary training was acquired at McGill University and the University of BC. 

Kelly currently teaches music at New Westminster Secondary as well as conducts DeCoro, an adult choir that is part of Coastal Sound Music Academy and the VSO School of Music Vocal Jazz Ensembles. Kelly has a lot of experience with both trained and untrained voices… and… she understands teenagers!
