Choirs Supporting Composers While Staying on the Right Side of Canadian Copyright Law

by Morna Edmundson

There is so much to take care of when running a choir.

One important task is registering the details of public performances after they happen and paying
prescribed fees so that the composers and arrangers can be paid.

Is it expensive? Not really – the cost is calculated on your ticket revenue. The minimum is $35 for a
concert.

Is it hard to do? No – it’s done online and your choir creates an account you can log back into once
set up. The staff at Entandem, the national organization affiliated with the Society of Composers,
Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) will be happy to walk you through it if you need
help.

Is it only for the “big” choir organizations? No, this applies to anyone presenting public concerts.
Please see the steps, links and contact information outlined in this document. Assign this to
someone after each concert and then sit back and relax, knowing you are doing the right thing and
supporting the livelihood of your favourite composers.
