Create Your Own Virtual Choir
with the help of the team from Phoenix Chamber Choir

Is there anyone who hasn’t heard of Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choirs?  Anyone who’s not been entertained or moved during this pandemic by the offering of a virtual choir on YouTube – whether in fun or in serious music-making?

It’s tempting to think that with the hiatus to our regular rehearsals, we can replace them with Virtual Choir offerings. But not so fast – Virtual Choirs are a joint effort of individual musicians, and knowledgeable video and sound engineers – they’re not a choral project in the sense of singing together, though the final product gives that impression.

So how to create a Virtual Choir?

Among the recordings you’ve probably seen are three from Vancouver’s Phoenix Chamber Choir and friends:

 

 

 

In the last few weeks the team putting these together has also produced two videos about the process of creating a Virtual Choir. Click here to view them.

They have very kindly offered the BCCF a couple of sessions in conjunction with these videos that will help to make us all more aware of the process involved in creating your own Virtual Choir – this will be available to current individual BCCF members, and to teams from member choirs.

The pre-requisite is that you should have watched both Phoenix How-To videos before the first Zoom session on Monday 17 August at 7:30pm; you will be asked to submit any questions in your registration application.

There will be a follow-up session on Monday, 31 August, with the hope that between the two sessions, you will have been able to create something, however small (a quartet is just fine), and experiment with the process as a preparation for doing a larger project with your choir in the fall.
