Calling young singers aged 16-25 for BC Youth Choir!

The BC Youth Choir is an auditioned provincial choir comprised of singers aged 16-25 from across the province. The choir meets and performs annually during May in conjunction with the BC Choral Federation’s Chorfest event. It’s a fun-filled weekend of rehearsing and performing incredible music at a high level!

The BCYC is unique amongst Canadian provincial youth choirs as it is run by youth, for youth.

The choir is directed each year by a renowned and inspirational choral conductor. Past conductors include: Jon Washburn, Frances Roberts, Peter Taylor, Kevin Zakresky, Debra Cairns, Heather Johnson, Adam Con, Graeme Langager, Kathleen Allan and Allison Girvan.

Each year, an aspiring young choral conductor is selected as the BCYC Intern Conductor to work with the choir under the clinician’s mentorship.

BCYC 2019 Conductor: Carrie Tennant

Carrie Tennant is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Vancouver Youth Choir. Carrie began her career as a high school choir teacher, and built a nationally-recognized choral program at Maple Ridge Secondary before deciding to pursue graduate studies in choral conducting in 2009. From 2009-2012 she directed the Vancouver Chor Leoni MYVoice Choir and the Sarah McLachlan Youth Choir. In 2012, Carrie worked as the assistant conductor to Diane Loomer, and in January of 2013 Carrie succeeded Diane as Artistic Director of EnChor. From 2007-2016 Carrie was the conductor of the award-winning Coastal Sound Youth Choir. Under Carrie’s direction, Coastal Sound was awarded first place in the youth choir category at the 2013 National Competition for Amateur Choirs. They have been featured at a number of conferences and events, including the 2013 Chorus America conference and Choral Canada’s Podium 2016 conference. Also in 2016, Coastal Sound’s popular Indiekor shows were recognized with Choral Canada’s National Award for Innovation.

Currently, on top of her work with VYC, Carrie is an Affiliate Conductor with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and a frequent clinician, adjudicator and retreat facilitator across Canada. A passionate advocate for building and sustaining community among BC choirs and conductors, in 2010 she helped found the “BC Choral Mentorship Project”: a collective that brings together expert speakers/conductors from across North America with local choral directors for master classes, discussion groups and lectures. In 2008, Carrie was the recipient of the BCCF Youth Achievement Award for distinguished support of choral music in British Columbia.
